PROTECTING EDUCATION

Brandon is a product of public schools and a former private school teacher. Education is what pulled him out of poverty and that’s why he wants to protect our schools from threats of charter schools and vouchers:

• Diversion of Funds: Charter schools and vouchers will divert public funds from public schools and steal resources from private schools. Additionally, your tax dollars allocated to local schools through property taxes might be redirected to other communities or counties where you do not reside.

• Lack of Accountability: Charter schools lack publicly elected boards of accountability and parental rights.

• Exclusion: Charter schools and voucher programs exclude kids and families they don't want. Brandon and his sons were excluded from private schools because of his sexual orientation.

• Threat to Religious Liberty: They bring government interference into private schools, undermining their independence. Once government money flows into private schools, they won’t be private anymore!

• Limited Reach: They primarily benefit a select group, leaving behind students with greater needs. For example, 90% of voucher recipients in Ohio already go to a private school. Moreover, in other states where vouchers are permitted, private schools often raise tuition rates beyond what the voucher can cover. This places a financial strain on families seeking assistance, contradicting claims that vouchers offer true "school choice." Private school is not a promise for all. But public school is open and welcome to all people. Public money should only go to public institutions.

INSTEAD, let's give all Kentucky teachers an 11% pay raise! Let's limit technology in classrooms! Let's revive a great books curriculum, and include grammar, logic, rhetoric, and civics in K-12 education!
